Winter Weather Gear:
Wazoo Gear, Cache Beanie
The Wazoo Cache Beanie is one of the warmest beanies or “watch caps” on the market. It is made from 100% fine Italian Merino wool with a soft fleece headband lining. Inside the lining is a covert pocket for stashing small pieces of emergency gear. Price $89

Tuff Possum Gear, Multipurpose Sit Pad
You gotta keep your butt dry and warm when sitting out in the woods, not to mention keeping your knees off the ground when kneeling doing camp tasks. The Multipurpose Sit Pad excels at that, besides being a handy fan to fan the campfire flames and even a signal panel in an emergency. Price: $39

Brynje of Norway, “Fishnet” Baselayers
You may laugh, but the use of fishnets as base layers in cold weather has a rich history with commercial fishermen, skiers, and Special Forces troops. The mesh traps thousands of pockets of air, providing insulation value, while allowing sweat vapor to pass further away from the skin. If you get soaked, the mesh reduces the surface area of saturated material touching your skin. I use and like the Super Thermo variety. Price $45-75

Tuff Possum Gear, Multipurpose Survival Scarf
Originally inspired by Mors Kochanski, this is first and foremost a scarf. The dead airspace trapped between the folds of the soft, diamond rip-stop nylon, works wonders to prevent cold air movement from stealing your precious body heat from unprotected neck areas. There are many other uses such as a gathering sack and a signal panel as well. Price $49

OTTE Gear, HT Insulated Hooded Parka
If you are looking for a hardcore warm winter coat that uses top of the line materials and is fairly light, I have been really enjoying the HT Insulated Hooded Parka from OTTE Gear. It uses 200g Primaloft Gold insulation and has just the right fabrics, pockets, and features that make me happy as someone who both makes and appreciates high quality gear. Price $309

Brautigam Expedition Works, Titanium Pack Shovel
This is possibly the most badass shovel you have ever seen. Cana Provisions, H2Go Water Treatment Device
This is a different kind of tool that I have been playing around with recently and am very impressed with. This device takes a little bit of table salt mixed in water and uses electricity to turn it into chlorine disinfectant to treat unsafe water. It’s is surprisingly easy to use and an integral part of my family water security plan for a grid-down disaster situation. Cana also just released a handy Water Data Card’s other H2Go uses like creating first aid disinfectants. Price $122 (+ $12 for the card)

Food and Drinks:
Bushcraft Coffee Company, Single Serve Coffee Packs
Bushcraft Coffee Company’s Campfire Blend is a smooth medium roast that I really enjoy. When they announced that they were going to put it in a single serve package, in the form of a large steeping “teabag”, I was stoked! These are incredibly convenient for fresh coffee when on the trail or on the go. Price: $12 for a 5-pack

LMNT, Canned Sparkling Electrolyte Drink
A lot of folks really like the LMNT electrolyte packets, but more recently they have launched the same clean recipe in a canned sparkling drink with some ridiculously delicious flavors. If you want a clean, healthy electrolyte beverage this is my recommendation. We took a cooler of these to Nature Reliance School’s Tactical Mantracking class in August and it was a hit with EVERYONE! “Black Cherry Lime” and “Grapefruit” are the best flavors! Price: $72 for a 32 count

This is my all time favorite freeze dried backpacking meal that I have ever eaten! It is an alfredo pasta with artichokes, spinach, kale, mozzarella, parmesan, ricotta, and fontina cheeses.
